The PI Covid 19 Taskforce of Washington was stood up by PICA-WA in April to address the devastating impact of Covid 19 on Pasifika communities. Covid 19 merely exposed the horrific realities that our Pasifika communities not only face in healthcare disparities, but also housing insecurity, high poverty rates, immigration barriers, environmental racism, and many other barriers that has kept our communities from thriving. The Task Force’s main strategy is to build powerful networks of Pasifika leaders who are leaning into our unique strengths and gifts to fight Covid 19. We have stood up 6 active workgroups with unique intervention strategies created with one motivation in mind, to increase the well-being of our communities physically, mentally, socially, economically and culturally. Our Taskforce members include the Pacific Islander Health Board, Marshallese Women’s Association, Pacific Islander Health Alliance, FSM Covid Taskforce, UTOPIA, CANN, APCC, APIC-WA, CAPAA & ACRS.
We encourage all Pasifika (Hawaiian, Samoan, Marshallese, CHamoru, Tongan, Chuukese and other PI) members who are essential workers to get tested. You don’t need health insurance to get tested and you will not be charged. It is important for everyone to sign up for a doctor whether they are positive or negative. Our Pacific Islander communities are the most at risk for this crisis. Let us fight this disease together. If you have any questions about how to access healthcare, please reach out.
We at PICAWA know that food is the second most requested needs for our Pasifika families during this crisis. We are doing our best to provide food in King, Pierce & Snohomish sites staffed by Pacific Islanders. We want to make sure that food boxes are getting out to all of our communities, Micronesian, Melanesian and Polynesian – if you know of any families in need, please share the flyers with them.
If you are in need of masks, please reach out to us. Masks have been proven as an effective prevention strategy against Covid 19 spread. It is important that our Pacific Islander families are wearing masks when they go out in public at all times. Keep our elders safe and wear your mask. The masks will stop us from spreading the virus that can kill our grandmothers and grandfathers. Thank you.
Email us a picture of yourself with a mask and a quote in English or in your Native Tongue promoting the reason why you are wearing a mask and then tag all your friends and family on social media. We hope that Pacific Islanders are taking the precautions and wearing masks so we stop the spread from killing our elders and vulnerable members.
